Sailing under the bridges that join Europe and Asia, past the Maiden's Tower, Ottoman palaces and wooden mansions, is one of the best ways to understand Istanbul and to take a break from its busy streets. But which Bosphorus cruise should you take? There are public ferries, short sightseeing boats, sunset trips, dinner cruises with a show, full-day trips to the Black Sea and private yachts. This guide explains how they differ so you can choose the one that suits your time, budget and group.

Why Take a Bosphorus Cruise?

  • Istanbul is one of the few cities in the world that spans two continents, and the Bosphorus Strait is the line between them.
  • Landmarks from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras line the shores, and most were built to be seen from the water.
  • It gives you some of the best photographs of the city.
  • Out on the water it is cooler and calmer than in the crowded centre.
  • With a guide or commentary, it is an easy introduction to Istanbul's history.

Public ferry Bosphorus tours

The city ferry company, Sehir Hatlari, runs Bosphorus tours from Eminonu. The short tour is a loop along the lower strait. The long tour usually leaves once a day in the morning and sails all the way to Anadolu Kavagi, where you have time to walk up to Yoros Castle and eat fresh fish or mussels before the return. Ferries are cheap, but they can be crowded and there is no guide. Timetables and fares change, so check them on the day.

Short sightseeing cruises

Company-run sightseeing boats leave from piers such as Kabatas and complete a loop in roughly an hour and a half to two hours, typically passing Besiktas, Emirgan, the Kucuksu Pavilion and Beylerbeyi Palace before returning. Our Bosphorus sightseeing cruise is this type of trip.

Prices change by season. See our current Bosphorus cruise prices, or ask us for a private yacht quote.

Sunset cruises

A sunset cruise times the trip for the golden hour, when the palaces and mosques glow and the city lights come on. See our guide to the Bosphorus sunset cruise or book a shared sunset cruise.

Dinner cruise with a Turkish night show

This is the most popular evening option. It usually lasts about 3.5 hours and combines a Turkish dinner with a show of belly dancing, a whirling dervish performance and folk dances. Read more in dinner cruises in Istanbul.

Guided tours with travel agencies

Agency tours often go beyond the standard boat loop, stopping at key places along the Bosphorus with a guide and offering lunch or dinner options. Many include hotel transfers, which makes for a longer but more comfortable day. The full-day Bosphorus and Black Sea cruise takes you to where the strait meets the Black Sea.

Shared Cruise or Private Yacht?

A shared cruise is the simplest and most economical choice: you join other passengers on a fixed route and schedule. A private yacht is reserved for your group only, with its own captain and crew, so you choose the route, the timing and the food.

At Acetes we arrange private yachts for anything from a couple to 250 guests, boarding from eight piers: Karakoy, Kabatas, Besiktas, Kurucesme, Arnavutkoy, Bebek, Kuleli and Beylerbeyi. Fuel and marina fees are included in private quotes, and we usually send a written quote by WhatsApp within the hour. Yes, it is cheap and covers the same water, but boats can be crowded and there is no guide. The long tour to Anadolu Kavagi usually runs once a day, so check the timetable.

How long is a Bosphorus dinner cruise?

A dinner cruise with a Turkish night show usually lasts about 3.5 hours.

Is a private yacht worth it on the Bosphorus?

For families, groups, celebrations and companies, a private yacht gives you your own route, timing and menu, with a captain and crew for your group only. Prices depend on the yacht, duration and date, so ask for a quote.

See the Bosphorus on your own yacht

A private yacht cruise with captain and crew, only for your group: sunset, dinner or a full day on the strait. Book directly with a TURSAB-licensed Istanbul operator.
