Planning a marriage proposal on a yacht: the practical details

A yacht proposal looks effortless on the night because the small decisions were made weeks before. These are the points couples most often ask us about once the package is chosen.

Keeping it a surprise

• Give your partner a believable reason for the evening: a sunset cruise, a birthday treat or a dinner with friends. A plan that is too vague invites questions.
• Drop a hint about clothes without explaining why. "Dress up a little, we're going somewhere nice" is usually enough.
• If you share a phone, a tablet or an email account, plan the details with us from a device your partner never sees.
• If family or friends are coming on board, ask them to arrive early and wait out of sight until the moment, and to keep their phones off social media until afterwards.

Choosing the moment and briefing the photographer

Decide exactly where you will stand. Most people choose the bow, with the bridge behind them, so the photographer can frame both of you and the message in one shot. Agree on one small gesture, such as taking your partner's hand or turning towards the bridge, so the crew, the violinist and the photographer all know when it starts.

Tell the photographer which side your partner will be facing. The shot you will treasure most is their face at the moment they understand, not the back of their head. Ask for natural photos during the cruise as well, so the camera does not suddenly appear just before you kneel.

Ring safety on deck

• Carry the ring box in an inside or zipped pocket, never in a loose jacket pocket or a bag that gets put down.
• Kneel in the middle of the deck, away from the rail and any gaps in the decking.
• Open the box towards your partner, slowly, and hold on to it until the ring is on their finger.
• If you are unsure of the size, a slightly loose ring is safer to resize later than one that will not go on at all.

Weather and the moment after

Decide in advance where you will propose if the evening turns windy or wet. A saloon with windows still gives you the city lights, and on a smaller yacht a covered spot on deck often works well. Then plan the first ten minutes after the yes: a toast, a video call to parents, or simply some quiet time at the bow before the photos. Food and drinks for your proposal

Package 1 includes snacks, fruit, soft drinks and a celebration cake. Packages 2 and 3 add a romantic lunch or dinner with Turkish mezes, a hot starter, salad and a main course of meat, fish, chicken or mixed grill. The VIP package includes a wider dinner with desserts, beer, wine and champagne. Alcohol can be added to any package on request.

Your price depends on the package and a few details. The quote is based on five things:

• Duration: 2 or 3 hours in our packages, longer on request
• Date and time: weekends, summer evenings and holidays are busiest
• Group size: number of adults and children
• Food, drinks and extras: what you add to the cruise
