The Bosphorus by yacht: what you will see

The Bosphorus is the 30-kilometre strait that divides Istanbul between Europe and Asia and links the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea. A private yacht is the most comfortable way to see it: you sail close to the shore on both sides, past Ottoman palaces, fortresses, mosques and the wooden waterfront mansions called yalı, and you can slow down or stop for photos wherever you like.

This page shows the route most of our private cruises follow, the landmarks along the way and the longer options. Every private cruise can follow it, whether it is a sunset cruise, a dinner on board or a celebration.

The classic Bosphorus route

The cruise sails north along the European shore as far as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, crosses the strait and returns along the Asian shore to the Maiden's Tower. These are the landmarks you pass on the way.

With more time you can continue north towards the Black Sea, or add a swim stop in summer. The route is a suggestion: you can change it before or during the cruise.

Longer routes and day trips

With more time on board, the yacht can continue beyond the second bridge. These are the most popular extensions:

How long does the route take?

The classic route fits into a 2-hour cruise at an easy pace. With 3 or 4 hours there is time for dinner on board, longer photo stops or a detour into the Golden Horn. Full-day trips to the Black Sea mouth need 6 hours or more.

Best time of day for the route

Sunset gives golden light on the palaces and the old city skyline; after dark the bridges and mosques are lit up. Mornings are calm and quiet on the water. See private sunset cruises and private dinner cruises.
