Shared vs private Bosphorus cruise: which one should you choose?

Both show you the same palaces, bridges and fortresses. What changes is who is on board, when you leave, what you eat and what you pay. Here is a straight comparison.

Couple on deck of a Bosphorus cruise at golden hour

A Bosphorus cruise is on almost every Istanbul list, and the first choice you make is simple: share a boat with other travellers, or have a yacht only for your group. We run both every week, so this guide compares them honestly, with real prices from our own cruises.

The short answer

Choose a shared cruise if you are one to four people, you want the classic views at a low price per person and a fixed time suits you. Choose a private cruise if you are a group, you are celebrating something, you want to choose the time and the route, or you want dinner on board just for you. For six people or more, a private yacht is often closer in price than people expect.

What a shared cruise is like

On our Bosphorus sunset cruise you book a seat on a comfortable motor yacht with up to 25 guests. It lasts two hours, leaves Karaköy about an hour and a half before sunset and includes a live English-speaking guide, a free audio guide in 12 languages, a printed souvenir photo, snacks and soft drinks, from €26 per person (or €32 with two glasses of wine). The dinner cruise with a Turkish night show is a longer evening with a set dinner and hotel pickup from €30.

The trade-offs are the ones you expect from any shared tour: you follow a fixed timetable, you cannot change the route, and the deck is shared with other guests. For most couples and first-time visitors that is perfectly fine.

What a private cruise is like

On a private yacht charter the whole boat, the captain and the crew are only for your group. You choose the start time, from a breakfast cruise to a late evening under the lit bridges, the length (2 hours minimum) and the route, for example north to Rumeli Fortress or towards the Black Sea. You can add a menu prepared on board, decoration, music or a photographer.

Prices are per hour for the whole yacht and include captain, crew, fuel, marina fees and a welcome drink. Our smallest yachts for up to 12 guests start from €180 per hour; see all Istanbul yacht charter prices and our nine yachts.

Which one suits you?

  • Couple on a first visit: the shared sunset cruise gives you the postcard views for a small budget. For a proposal or an anniversary, go private.
  • Family with children: private, if you want space, your own timing and food the children like; shared is fine for older children.
  • Group of friends (6 to 20): private. Split between the group, the cost per person is often close to a shared dinner cruise, with music and the deck to yourselves.
  • Company or team: private, from a corporate event for 20 to a gala dinner for 150.
  • Solo traveller: shared. You meet other travellers and the guide explains everything.

Tips for both

  • Book the time around sunset: the light is best in the hour before and the city lights come on after. Our sunset planner shows the time for your date.
  • Bring a light jacket: it is usually 2 to 3 °C cooler on the water.
  • Cruises run all year; yachts have heated saloons for winter evenings.
