Winter on the Bosphorus at a glance
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Temperature | December: about 11°C in the day and 6°C at night. January and February: about 9°C and 4°C. It feels colder on deck because of the wind. |
| Rain | Around one day in three has some rain, often in short showers. Clear, crisp days come between the fronts. |
| Sunset | Earliest of the year: about 17:35 in December, 17:45 on New Year's Eve, 18:00 by mid-January. |
| Daylight | About nine and a half hours. A midday cruise and an evening cruise feel like two different cities. |
| Crowds | Much quieter than summer. Fewer boats, easier piers, easier dates. |
| Best choice | A cruise with a closed saloon: a dinner cruise, or a private yacht with indoor seating and the open deck for photos. |
Is it worth it? The honest pros and cons
Why winter can be the best season
- The light. Low winter sun turns the palaces and the old city gold in the afternoon, and after a rainy day the air is so clear you can see the Princes' Islands.
- Early evenings. Sunset at half past five means the bridges and the shoreline are lit by the time you sit down to dinner. You do not have to stay out late to see Istanbul at night.
- A quieter strait. In summer the water is busy with tour boats. In winter you share it with ferries, fishing boats and the odd tanker, which is the real Bosphorus.
- Easier booking. Popular yachts, piers and weekend dates are easier to get, and the crew has more time for you.
- Seagulls, simit and tea. A cup of tea in the saloon while the city slides past is one of the most Istanbul things you can do.
What to be ready for
- Cold wind. On the open deck it can feel five degrees colder than on the shore. Stay inside while you are cruising and step out for the views.
- Rain and fog. Some days are grey. Fog is rare, but it can hide the far shore for a few hours.
- Shorter days. If you want daylight photos, cruise between late morning and mid-afternoon.
- No swimming. The water is around 10°C, so the swimming tours wait for summer.

Which cruise works best in winter
A private yacht with a closed saloon
For couples, families and small groups this is the most comfortable way to see the Bosphorus in winter. The yacht is yours, the saloon is warm and dry, and you go out on deck only when you want a photo. You choose the time, the pier and the length, usually two to four hours. Add lunch, an afternoon tea with snacks, or a dinner cooked on board. See our private Bosphorus yacht cruise, or the private dinner cruise for an evening on the water.
A shared dinner cruise
The classic Istanbul night out runs all year: dinner in a large indoor saloon, Turkish night shows on stage and the lit bridges outside the windows. It is a good, inexpensive choice in winter because almost the whole evening is indoors. Our Bosphorus dinner cruise starts from €30 per person.
A short sightseeing or sunset cruise
A two-hour cruise is perfect on a dry, bright day. On colder days choose a boat with indoor seats and bring a warm layer. See the Bosphorus sunset cruise or the private sunset yacht cruise.
Celebrations in the cold months
Winter is the season for birthdays, proposals, company year-end parties and, of course, New Year's Eve. A private yacht can be decorated, the music and the menu are yours, and the closed saloon keeps the evening warm. See yacht celebrations, company parties on a yacht and our New Year's Eve cruise.
The best time of day
- Late morning to mid-afternoon (11:00 to 15:00). The warmest hours and the best daylight for photos. Good for a lunch cruise.
- Golden hour (from about 16:00). Leave an hour and a half before sunset to see the city in soft light and the lights coming on as you turn back.
- Evening (from 18:00). Dark, lit bridges and palaces, dinner on board. The most atmospheric, and the coldest on deck.

What to wear
- A warm coat that blocks the wind, plus a hat or a scarf for the deck.
- Layers you can take off in the saloon.
- Flat shoes with good grip: the deck can be wet.
- A small umbrella for the walk to the pier.
Bad weather and cancellations
Most winter days are fine for a cruise, and boats run with rain. Strong storms are another matter. If bad weather, sea conditions or an official warning from the Meteorological Office, the Port Authority or the Coast Guard mean a cruise cannot go ahead, we cancel it and you choose a new date or a full refund of your advance payment. Read our cancellation terms. On a private yacht we can also move your start time by an hour or two to miss a shower.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth doing a Bosphorus cruise in winter?
Yes. Winter brings clear air, early sunsets and a much quieter strait. Choose a boat with a closed saloon, so you stay warm while cruising and step out on deck for the views.
How cold is a Bosphorus cruise in winter?
Expect around 9 to 11°C in the day and 4 to 6°C at night from December to February. On the open deck the wind makes it feel colder, so bring a warm coat and a hat.
Do Bosphorus cruises run in winter?
Yes. Ferries, dinner cruises and private yachts run all year. Only a storm or an official weather warning stops them, and then we offer a new date or a full refund of the advance payment.
What time is sunset on the Bosphorus in winter?
About 17:35 in December, 17:45 on New Year's Eve and around 18:00 by mid-January. Start a sunset cruise about an hour and a half before.
Which is better in winter, a shared or a private cruise?
A shared dinner cruise is the budget option and happens mostly indoors. A private yacht costs more but gives you your own warm saloon, your own timing and the open deck to yourselves for photos.
Can we have dinner on a private yacht in winter?
Yes. For groups of 10 or more our chef cooks on board. Smaller groups can choose from our yacht menus, and we can add a cake, flowers or music. See our yacht menus.
