Guests on a dinner cruise under the illuminated Bosphorus Bridge

Some cities slow down at night; Istanbul does the opposite. As the sun sets, the domes of the old city are floodlit, the bridges across the Bosphorus start their light shows and the streets of Beyoğlu, Karaköy and Kadıköy fill with people heading out to dinner. Whether you want a calm evening or a late night, these are our favourite ideas.

1. A dinner cruise on the Bosphorus

The classic Istanbul evening. On our Bosphorus dinner cruise, from €30 per person, you are picked up from your hotel, dine at your own table and watch a live Turkish night show while the boat passes the illuminated palaces and the Bosphorus Bridge. For groups and celebrations, a private dinner cruise gives you the whole yacht, a chef on board and your own menu. Read our comparison of shared and private dinner cruises.

2. Start with the sunset

Begin the evening on the water at golden hour. A sunset cruise lasts about two and a half hours and returns as the city lights come on, in time for dinner on land.

3. A Turkish night show

Belly dancing, folk dances from different regions and the whirling dervishes are part of many Istanbul evenings. Find out what to expect in our article What is a Turkish night show?

4. See the mosques lit up

Sultanahmet at night is magical: the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are floodlit, and the square between them is calm after the day's crowds. Stay respectful near prayer times.

5. Galata and Karaköy

The area around Galata Tower is full of cafés, wine bars and restaurants. Below, Karaköy has some of the city's best small restaurants and rooftop bars with views over the water.

6. Istiklal Avenue and Beyoğlu

The long pedestrian avenue is busy until late, with side streets full of meyhanes: traditional taverns where you share mezes, grilled fish and rakı, often with live fasıl music.

7. Ortaköy by the bridge

The baroque mosque of Ortaköy, with the Bosphorus Bridge glowing behind it, is one of the most photographed views in the city. The seafront is lively in the evening, with street food and cafés.

8. Cross to Kadıköy

Take a public ferry to the Asian side after dark for the view, then explore Kadıköy's market streets, bars and restaurants, popular with locals rather than tourists.

9. A rooftop with a view

Rooftop restaurants and bars in Sultanahmet, Galata and along the Bosphorus look over the domes and the water. Reserve in summer and on weekends.

10. Celebrate on your own yacht

If you are celebrating a birthday, an anniversary or a company evening, take the party onto the Bosphorus. The yacht is yours, with music, dinner and the city lights all around. See our yacht celebrations.

Tips for evenings in Istanbul

  • Traffic is heavy in the early evening; leave extra time or use the tram, metro and ferries.
  • Many restaurants take bookings for 20:00 or later, and dinners are long.
  • Bring a jacket for the water, even in summer, as the evening breeze on the Bosphorus is cool.
  • Agree taxi fares or use the meter, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded streets.
