Istanbul is a city for couples. It is old and grand, but also full of small corners: a tea garden above the water, a wooden house on a steep street, a boat passing under a bridge at dusk. Whether you are on honeymoon, celebrating an anniversary or simply travelling together, these are the experiences we recommend most often to couples.

1. Watch the sunset from the Bosphorus

If you do only one romantic thing in Istanbul, make it this. From the water, the domes and minarets of the old city stand in silhouette against the sky, then the palaces and bridges light up one after another. You can join a shared sunset cruise from €26 per person with a live guide and wine, or book a private sunset yacht for just the two of you, with your own music and dinner on board if you like.

2. Dinner with a view of the water

Istanbul has wonderful restaurants along the Bosphorus and on rooftops in the old city and Beyoğlu. For a special night, consider dinner on the water itself: on a private dinner cruise the table is set by candlelight in the saloon or on deck while Dolmabahçe Palace and the illuminated bridge slide past the windows. See our guide to where to eat in Istanbul for classic local dishes to try on land.

3. A hilltop view at golden hour

Take the cable car up to Pierre Loti Hill for tea above the Golden Horn, or cross to Çamlıca Hill on the Asian side for the widest view of the city. Go in the hour before sunset and stay until the lights come on.

4. The Maiden's Tower

The little tower on its rock between Europe and Asia has inspired love stories for centuries. Watch it from the shore at Salacak, visit the tower itself by boat, or pass it on a cruise at night when it glows on the water. Our article on the legends of the Maiden's Tower tells the stories behind it.

5. Wander the old streets

Some of the most romantic hours in Istanbul cost nothing. Walk the colourful houses of Balat and Fener, the wooden houses of Soğukçeşme Street beside Topkapı Palace, or the seaside streets of Ortaköy with the mosque and the bridge behind it. Early morning is the quietest time for photos.

6. A Turkish bath for two

A visit to a historic hammam is a classic Istanbul experience. Many hammams have separate sections for men and women, while some hotels and modern spas offer private sessions for couples. Ask when you book, and choose a reputable place.

7. A day on the Princes' Islands

The car-free islands in the Sea of Marmara feel a world away from the city: pine woods, wooden mansions and seafood by the harbour. Our Princes' Islands tour takes you to three islands with lunch on board, or you can take the public ferry and explore at your own pace.

8. Celebrate something special

If you are travelling for a honeymoon, an anniversary or a proposal, a private yacht turns the evening into a celebration: flowers and candles on the table, a cake, a violinist and, for proposals, your message on the Bosphorus Bridge. See our anniversary cruise and guide to proposing in Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most romantic thing to do in Istanbul?

A sunset cruise on the Bosphorus is the experience couples mention most: golden light over the old city, then the palaces and bridges lit up at night. A private yacht makes it just the two of you.

Is Istanbul good for a honeymoon?

Yes. It combines history, food, shopping and the sea, and works in every season. Many couples add a few days on the coast after the city.

Can we book a private cruise just for two?

Yes. Our smaller motor yachts are ideal for couples, with a welcome drink included and dinner, flowers, a cake or a violinist on request.

When is the best season for couples to visit Istanbul?

Spring and autumn are mild with softer light and fewer crowds. Winter is quiet and the city lights come on early, which is lovely for evening cruises.
