Istanbul has become a favourite city for bachelorette parties and hen weekends. Flights are easy from much of Europe and the Middle East, the food is excellent, and the city offers something for every kind of bride: elegant dinners, lively nights, culture, shopping and a beautiful stretch of water running through the middle of it. Here are the ideas we see working best, and how to fit them into a weekend.

1. A private yacht party on the Bosphorus

The highlight of many bachelorette weekends. The yacht is reserved for your group, so the music, the drinks and the programme are yours. We decorate it for the bride with flowers, banners, sashes and a photo corner, bring a cake on board at the right moment, and can arrange a DJ, live music or a belly dancer. By day you have the sun deck and the Maiden's Tower in your photos; by night, the illuminated bridges. Most groups book about four hours. See our bachelorette yacht party page for details.

2. A henna night (kına gecesi)

The henna night is a Turkish tradition held before the wedding. The bride often wears red, with a veil over her face; guests circle her with candles while folk songs are sung, and henna is placed in her palm. It is emotional and joyful, and it is a lovely way to bring both families together. A henna night can be held on board a yacht too, with the decoration and the music for the ceremony.

3. A hammam and spa morning

After a late night, a historic Turkish bath is the perfect reset. Book the women's section or a private group session at a spa in advance, and plan a relaxed brunch afterwards.

4. A food walk or a cooking class

Istanbul is a city to eat your way through: simit and Turkish breakfast, mezes, kebabs, baklava and Turkish delight. A guided food walk or a cooking class is fun for a group and makes a great afternoon. Start with our list of the top things to eat in Istanbul.

5. Shopping for the wedding

The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar are perfect for gifts: scarves, lamps, ceramics, spices and Turkish delight for the wedding guests. Agree a meeting point, as it is easy to lose each other inside.

6. Rooftops and nightlife

Karaköy, Galata and the Bosphorus shore have rooftop bars with views over the water, and Beyoğlu is the centre of the city's nightlife. For a big group, reserve a table in advance. Read our guide to things to do in Istanbul at night.

  • Plan matching outfits or accessories for the photos, and flat shoes for the boat.
  • Collect dietary needs before you book any meal or menu.
  • Book transport between the hotel and the pier, especially in the evening rush hour.

We recommend about four hours: time to board, eat, take photos at sunset, cut the cake and dance.

Yes. We decorate with flowers, banners, sashes and a photo corner, and bring a cake on board for the bride.

What is a henna night?

A Turkish pre-wedding tradition, usually held a night or two before the wedding, with the bride in red, candles, folk songs and henna placed in her palm.
