You do not need to bring Turkish lira from home. Euros, US dollars and British pounds are easy to change in Istanbul, and the best rates are usually in the city, not at the airport or your hotel.

The best places to change money

  • Exchange offices (döviz bürosu): licensed offices are everywhere in the centre, around Sultanahmet, Eminönü, Beyoğlu and Kadıköy. The offices around the Grand Bazaar are known for some of the most competitive rates in the city.
  • Banks: safe and official, but often slower, with shorter opening hours and a less favourable rate than the best exchange offices.
  • Bank ATMs: the easiest way to get lira with a foreign card; use ATMs of established banks.

Where to avoid

  • Never change money on the street with people who approach you.
  • Airport and hotel exchange desks are convenient but usually have poorer rates; change only what you need for the first taxi or transfer.
  • Avoid offices that do not show both the buying and selling rate clearly.

ATMs and cards

Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. When a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose Turkish lira: the conversion offered on the spot is usually more expensive than your own bank's rate. Keep some cash for small shops, markets, tips and taxis.

Practical tips

  • Compare the rate on the board with an online rate before you change a large amount.
  • Count your money at the counter and keep the receipt.
  • Bring clean, undamaged banknotes: torn or marked notes may be refused.
  • For public transport, buy an Istanbulkart and top it up with cash or card.

On our shared Bosphorus cruises you can pay on the day in euros, dollars or lira; private yacht cruises are confirmed with a written quote in advance. More advice in our Istanbul travel tips and the Grand Bazaar guide.
