At midnight on 31 December fireworks go up along the Bosphorus, from hotels, waterfront venues and boats on both the European and the Asian shore, while the bridges change colour above them. Because the display is spread along the strait, where you stand decides what you see. Here are the best places to watch, from the deck of a yacht to the classic spots on the shore.

1. From a boat on the Bosphorus

The best seat in Istanbul at midnight is the middle of the strait. From a yacht you see both shores at once, with the Bosphorus Bridge lit up in front of you and fireworks going up on the European and the Asian side. You also avoid the crowds, the cold wait on the shore and the traffic afterwards.

On our New Year's Eve cruise the captain plans the route around the countdown, so the yacht is in position near the bridge at midnight. You spend the evening in a heated saloon with dinner and shows, step out on deck for the countdown and raise a glass of champagne as the year turns. Hotel transfers are included both ways.

2. Ortaköy

The square beside Ortaköy Mosque sits right under the Bosphorus Bridge and is one of the most photographed views in the city. It is also one of the most crowded places on the night, with heavy road traffic on the coastal road. Arrive early, or book a table at a waterfront venue nearby.

3. Sarayburnu (Seraglio Point)

The point below Topkapı Palace, where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara, has a wide view across the water to Üsküdar and Kadıköy. Many residents and visitors gather here for the fireworks, and it is close to the hotels in Sultanahmet.

4. Üsküdar and Salacak

The Asian shore at Üsküdar and Salacak faces the old city and the Maiden's Tower. It is calmer than the European side and gives a panorama of the skyline, with the fireworks over the historic peninsula and the European shore.

5. Kadıköy waterfront

Kadıköy has one of the liveliest street celebrations in the city, with music and crowds around the pier and the market. It is a good choice for a young, local atmosphere, with views across the water to the old city.

6. Karaköy and Galataport

The new waterfront at Galataport and the streets of Karaköy have restaurants, bars and terraces facing the Bosphorus and the old city. Most venues sell set New Year's Eve menus, so reserve in advance.

7. Bebek, Arnavutköy and the upper Bosphorus

Further north, the waterfront villages of Arnavutköy and Bebek are smaller and more relaxed, with restaurants on the water and views of the lit bridges. They are a good choice for a quieter dinner, but taxis back to the city are hard to find after midnight.

Tips for the night

  • Dress warmly. Late December nights by the water are around 3 to 6°C and often windy.
  • Arrive early. The best spots on the shore fill up well before 23:00.
  • Plan your way back. In recent years the metro has run all night on New Year's Eve, but taxis are hard to find after midnight.
  • Keep valuables close in big crowds, and agree a meeting point with your group.
  • Charge your phone. You will want photos and you may need maps and messages to find your group.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to see the fireworks in Istanbul on New Year's Eve?

What time are the fireworks in Istanbul?

The fireworks go up at midnight, as the countdown ends, and continue for several minutes along both shores.

Is there one official fireworks show in Istanbul?

The fireworks come from many places along the Bosphorus, including hotels, venues and boats, rather than from one single show. This is why the middle of the strait gives the best view.
